About the Verbal Penetration Book

"Powerful, provocative, and raw, self-described Punany Poets take readers on an extraordinary erotic journey, melding poetry, short stories, and prose to explore the essence of black male and female sexuality. The Punany Poets are pioneers of erotic entertainment, creating lush literary works that also encourage self-empowerment and safer sex. Punany Poets' founder Jessica Holter, whose urban classic Punany: The Hip Hop Psalms was featured on HBO's Real Sex, has adapted the Poets' compositions into a groundbreaking anthology created to arouse the senses and inspire the imagination. Vivid, compelling poems and prose pieces deal with every facet of modern love and lust and blend tantalizing sensual imagery with an underlying message of urban-rooted AIDS awareness. Never preachy, always original, and guaranteed to stimulate the individual and the couple, Verbal Penetration is unique among poetry anthologies - a riveting, multi-dimensional erotic experience with heart, soul, and message."

The Politics of The Black Sexual Revolution & Hip Hop Music

"When my friend, Dwayne Wiggins, came to my writing class and heard the first three poems I had ever written, "The Head Doctor," "Daddy Sam," and "Punany Dream", I never expected him to see share my vision for a soundtrack to accompany my a book," says Jessica Holter, Founder of The Punany Poets. The Punany Project was born of her friendship with the famed musician and founder of Tony Toni Tone'  their shared vision of creating a new avenue to AIDS awareness for the Hip Hop community, that was bearing witness to the birth of misogyny in the urban community.

Black Love Art and Poetry by Jessica Holter

"Man, this stuff I saw when I was a Hip Hop entertainment Journalist was devastating to my ego as a woman, and as a Black woman. But I had seen that the lyrics of the music that lay cadence to our lives reflected shame and anger over what the crack epidemic was to the sanctity of our womanhood. It is funny... I have been accused of being a witch because I know things. But really, I am a writer and an observer of life... a triple Scorpio ONeg, true, but it was obvious to anyone watching. I was a Hip Hop Entertainment Journalist and a young sexually active women, hearing NWA verbally abuse me to sick beats. I listed to C Delores Tucker's warning and considered all of our rights under Freedom of Speech. So I decided to produce an anthology called Punany: The Hip Hop Psalms. It would have images reflective of cultural tastes and Hip Hop expectations, but also, it would put the naked body of women before the world, not as something to shame, but as something to be admired. Suddenly, we were more than a publishing company. We were the founders of a movement, a Black Sexual Revolution. Eventually, Dwayne and Lev Berlak gave produced the soundtrack, which became the score for the HBO Real Sex episode and gave me a career in theater and the sexual health sector." Holter and The Punany Poets still tour, and Wiggins still produces her music.

Her second book,  Verbal Penetration is devoid of the provocative photography, as Simon & Schuster found them to be pornographic. But in the years since her debut in 1995, Holter has compiled a library of visual, audio and literary treasures she now shares with the World through her Georgia based nonprofit, Holter Intellectual Property, Incorporated

Holter points to the "War on Drugs" mass incarceration and the subsequent shift in social mores as the catalysts for the HIV crisis in the urban community. "Hip Hop was our savior. It was the Gospel the World had not heard before. Rappers are writers. They are poets and prophets, whose words are heard and abided in. The voice of Hip Hop ministry defines culture the World over. It was powerful then, and it is more powerful now. We thought we were planting the seeds of our kind the economic system as businessmen. But we instead, we had buried our talents in the soil of a new plantation, the prison plantation. What this meant for women, our sexual health, our children and the family values and structure we were still learning to balance on the poverty line is a national crime; a real WTF moment that even a Black President did not address.

Her third book, Also published by Simon & Shuster on Zane's Strebor imprint is called The Punany Experience: The War Between Tops and Bottoms. Though this book is a novel, the subtitle is the subtext to the issues surrounding HIV and Black Women since mass incarceration began. "It is simple really. If you put men together in cages for long periods of time, sex happens. If you study the patterns of a people, you know things about them that they do not know, or can not reckon with. If you set a standard for happiness, cast their heroes in the roles you need to be played, offering temptations and hope to escape poverty, you really do not have to do anything else. Of course, a man will come to hate a woman, who neglects her children and does sex favors in alleys for drugs. Yet he if her dealer, standing in judgment. This has always been a war between tops and bottoms. We are the spoils of a war they waged on African and indigenous American people. To the victor go the spoils. Prison is a way of tracking this investment. Add AIDS into the equation, you have a pandemic and an opportunity to also benefit off pharmaceuticals and organized child kidnap.
